Should I Drink Tea to Cool Down?

I bet you did a double take at that title didn’t you? I certainly did when writing it!

A hot drink cooling you down, the world must be going mad! It’s not actually (well not quite yet), there is such a thing as having a piping hot cup of tea on a sweltering hot summers day. You heard it here first, I’m telling you.

I know, I know, the last thing you want when there’s sweat pouring down your face and the fiery rays of the sun burning your skin is a HOT drink - but it's now suggested that you’re better off having a hot drink than a cold one.

So let's look at the science of this mind-bending phenomenon.

When you drink a hot drink, your body temperature rises. Now, the hotter you are, the more likely that you are going to sweat. Once you sweat, it sits on the skin, and will then evaporate; which cools you down. You’ll be surprised at how quickly water evaporates on our skin. Professor Peter McNaughton, a neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge, says that we are mainly cooled down by water evaporating. Clever, I know. Plus, another fun fact for you is that drinking too many cold drinks can cause all the blood vessels to tighten in your body which means you’ll feel a lot hotter, so the answer is drink tea!

Here at BRUU we sell the perfect hot beverage for a hot summers day - still doesn’t sit right saying that does it but we now know it’s true. We have a range of teas to suit all your thirsty needs. Something fruity - Tangy Peach. Something to sooth the stressed - Calming Camomile. Or my childhood favourite - Strawberry Milkshake. Being the nosey person that I am I would love to hear from you all on how tea has made you cool down this summer, and whether i.n fact it works or not! Send all your thoughts to us at hello@bruutea.co.uk.

So next time the sun is out and you need to cool down, put down the ice cold glass of water and pick up a steaming hot cup of tea. But when people laugh just act smug because we now know the best answer to cooling down is tea - tea for the win!

If you really can’t bring yourself to put the kettle on… There’s always iced tea, but that’s a whole other blog!
