The story of BRUU

I know a fair few of you have been with us a long long time, and you are our most favourite people, but how many of you know BRUU actually came into being?

We thought we would tell you how your favourite tea subscription service came about… so get the kettle on, find a comfy seat, and let us fill you in… It’s story time!

Once upon a time… our founder Anneka took her boyfriend Scott, to meet her family for the first time. As avid tea drinkers, Anneka’s family, obviously offered Scott a cuppa… to which he said no! Shock/Gasp! Tea just wasn’t his thing, or so he thought!

A few years passed, and Scott continued to say no, until a stroll through the famous Shambles in York changed everything. They came across a small tea shop, the like of which they had never seen before, shelves upon shelves of loose leaf tea to choose from. Rooibos, Green, White, Oolong, Darjeeling… Scott found a passion for tea like never before! It was the rubbish in the bags he wasn’t fond of, not tea! Once he went loose, he was determined to never go bag!

Once home, he tried to find more of these delicious loose teas, but none of his local shops sold any, and buying online was hit and miss – the tea tasted old! So he had a brainwave;

“What if we could get new, exciting teas delivered through our door every month. Like a tea discovery service…” And the rest, as they say, was history, BRUU was born.

In the early days, we were very simple, with set teas sent each month, all based around a theme, very little branding, and all packed in their living room! Nevertheless, the idea quickly took off and we started to partner with other brands to include little surprises, something that still marks us as unique in the tea subscription market today. We worked on how to improve our box, built the brand, and developed the software to run our clever little tea machine which would be able to personalise our boxes based on your individual preferences.

We have gone from strength to strength ever since, with our boxes featured on ITV’s This Morning, endorsed by Masterchef, and numerous influential bloggers. We have partnered with Next, Boots, Debenhams, and Vodafone, to name a few, and have much more planned for this year!
