A smallholding situated in the Alto region in Paraguay produces this Yerba Mate (pronounced matt-ay), which is as culturally entrenched in Paraguayan culture as tea is to the English.

What it is?
Yerba mate is a herbal tea made from the leaves and twigs of the Ilex paraguariensis plant, a type of holly.  It is consumed in South America, largely for its health benefits, thanks to the antioxidants found in the tea. Some of the benefits include increased energy, a boost to your immune system and protective elements against heart diseases.

Why we love it
Traditionally, Yerba Mate is served in a dried and hollowed gourd which is then passed around and shared with a group of people. It's the perfect BRUU for when friends pop by. Dairy-free, gluten-free, suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Where it’s from
Alto Paraná, Paraguay. 190m above sea level. The Parana plantation exports very little of its tea, because it is valued so highly by the locals who consume most of the harvest themselves.

How our drink hits the senses
A very light almost tobacco aroma is produced the longer this tea brews. During the infusion, not a lot of scent is produced, mainly due to the hardy nature of the plant.

The taste journey
Yerba Mate usually tastes a bit bitter, depends on the quality and type of it. If you add a lot of tea in the cup, then it'll taste a bit more bitter. ... It tastes a little like strong green tea. We recommend adding some lemon on top for a better taste. If you find it too strong and bitter, reduce brewing time. If you like a very strong infusion, increase brewing time.
